Wilfred Fue
Born in Dar es Salaam, Wilfred was named for his German doctor who helped
bring him into the world. As customary, he has adopted the tribe of his
father and is proud of his Pare heritage. The Pare tribe originate from
an area in eastern Tanzania in the mountains that bear their name.
Wilfred did not follow the path that most guides follow. His family moved
to Arusha in 1985 and he studied business education and took a job working
for the National Bank of Commerce (at the time the country’s only
bank). He then moved to the coastal town of Tanga and continued his studies,
but this time in Education.
Having tried his hand in both teaching and banking, he still had not found
a career he was passionate about. He knew that he enjoyed living in Arusha
and knew from his time there that the tourism industry brought the best
opportunities. Accordingly, it was back to school, but this time as a
student in wildlife ecology and tour guiding. Wilfred completed his education
at the Mweka Wildlife College and now has his dream job guiding private,
wildlife-focused safaris for Africa Dream Safaris.
Out of all the animals in the bush, Wilfred’s favorite is the cheetah.
This is because of its grace and speed and the fact that it only eats
the freshest food and will never scavenge a meal. Plovers are his favorite
bird. He finds it fascinating that plovers nest on the ground and camouflages
their eggs to protect them from predators as opposed to nesting in trees
as other birds do.
Tarangire is Wilfred’s favorite park because of the magnificent
landscape including the ancient baobab trees, thought to be some of the
oldest trees on the planet. The most interesting thing that he has experienced
on safari is when several elephants worked together to save a baby elephant
from crocodiles in the Grumeti River. When not on safari, Wilfred enjoys
spending time with his wife and daughter and not surprisingly, continues
to study wildlife ecology and biology.
