Deo Williams
Deo is a member of the Chagga tribe from the slopes of Kilimanjaro. He
has been a driver guide since 1992 focusing on the Northern Tanzania Safari
Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Manyara). He came to Africa
Dream Safaris in 2005 after working for another tour company. He enjoys
being a driver guide because he loves watching animals (especially the
big cats). Deo enjoys meeting people from all over the world and learning
about their way of life. “I want my clients to also learn about
my country, our history, our politics and the fact that Tanzania is such
a peaceful country.”
He loves the cheetah because of their great speed and the fact that they
kill so “politely”. The most amazing wildlife encounter he
recalls is watching a crocodiles kill an elephant calf in the Serengeti.
He had taken clients to the Grumeti River and they were watching a large
breeding (cow/calf) herd drink from the river. Suddenly a large crocodile
leaped up and grabbed one of the calves and took it under the water. The
mother elephant was hysterical and used her trunk to search underwater
and then picked up several individual crocodiles and threw them. Unfortunately,
she was unable to find or save her calf.
Another spectacular wildlife encounter that Deo recalls was watching lions
hunting buffalo in the Ngorongoro Crater. Buffalo (weighing up to 2,000
pounds) can be difficult for even a large pride of lions to tackle. Lions
frequently jump on their backs to bring them down. This particular buffalo
ran into an acacia bush with the lion still on his back. All the clients
could see at one point was a lion looking as if it was sitting on top
of the acacia bush. The lion quickly jumped off because of the pain from
the acacia thorns.
