Lodge Overview

Pristine beauty. Ultimate privacy. Exclusive luxury. These are just a few of the terms that come to mind when trying to accurately describe the ambience of Bateleur Camp. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this romantic camp is comprised of just two intimate camps of nine tented pavilions each.

Overlooking the extensive game-rich plains of the Maasai Mara, Bateleur Camp is cradled beneath the great Ollololo (meaning "zigzag" in Swahili) Escarpment of the Rift Valley, fringing the western boundary of the Maasai Mara Reserve. The camp is located below the location where Out of Africa's famous final scene was filmed and its authentic style certainly seems to reflect the safari camps of the early 1900's.

Each private tent is set underneath the leafy canopy of the riverside forest and offers a truly stunning view over the endless ocean of game rich plains. Relax in one of the overstuffed leather chairs on your private veranda while sipping your favorite beverage and watch giraffe or elephant frolic in the distance. The private accommodations are linked to the pool and the larger open air dining pavilion by sun dappled walkways.

Elegant antiques and rare leather bound books adorn the lounge and crisp linens drape the tables. Indulge in delicate lunches and delicious 5 course meals, served on fine china and elegant silver with the assistance of your own private butler. Elegant surroundings still manage to come with unpretentious smiles, easy laughs, and gracious service by all of the staff. Chase your evening meal with port and a cigar next to a glowing fire underneath a star-filled sky. Sundowners on the rim of the Great Rift Valley and dramatic candlelit dinners beside the Mara River can also be arranged to make for especially memorable African experiences.

Situated on the western border of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, near the adjacent facilities of Kichwa Tembo, Bateleur Camp is nestled at the base of the Oloololo Escarpment on a private concession leased from the Maasai People. Situated in the pristine Mara Triangle, Bateleur Camp offers supreme game viewing opportunities away from most of the other lodges that dominate the more heavily touristed Central Mara Plains.

The spacious safari tents offer stunning views over the endless Mara grasslands. The 18 tents (2 camps of 9 tents each) have en-suite bathrooms and private verandas. A spacious and open air veranda offers al fresco dining opportunities with sweeping views of the Mara plains. A safari lounge, well appointed with overstuffed sofas, tastefully chosen safari décor, and authentic antiques provides a comfortable living room away from home; in the evenings a blazing fireplace creates a warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy drinks and conversation by. A refreshing lap pool invites guests to widdle away the afternoon heat between game drives. A gift shop is available at the nearby Kichwa Tembo reception area.

Food and Drink

Expect world class cuisine and unparalleled VIP service at Bateleur Camp. Meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - are served to order. Meal choices are explained and requests are taken by your personal butler, but he or she may be accompanied at times by the chef himself. Dinner consists of 5 delicious courses, and is usually a major evening production. Meals are typically served in the open air dining pavilion or on the comfort of your tent's own private veranda. So eat, drink and be merry - everything including most alcoholic beverages is included at Bateleur Camp.
