The Zanzibar extension can be effortlessly integrated at the end of any safari itinerary via a 1.5-hour nonstop flight from Arusha to Zanzibar. One can literally go from a morning wildlife viewing in one of Tanzania’s famous northern parks to an afternoon snorkeling and sun bathing on one of Zanzibar’s idyllic beaches. We recommend the following daily flight from Arusha to Zanzibar:

Regional Air (daily flight): Arusha to Zanzibar from 12.45pm to 2.20pm.

On our signature fly in and drive back safaris, the timing of this flight allows for a morning game drive in either Lake Manyara or Tarangire (depending upon your itinerary) before your flight departure to Zanzibar. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from either the Tarangire or Manyara Park Gates to the Arusha Airport and about 2.5-hours from the Ngorongoro Crater to the Arusha Airport.

Upon arrival in Zanzibar, an ADS representative will welcome you to Zanzibar and transfer you to your hotel with a narrated tour enroute (all flights and transfers are included in our Zanzibar extensions). Transfer times are noted below from the Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ):

ZNZ to Zanzibar Serena Inn (Stone Town): 10 minutes
ZNZ to Fumba Beach Lodge: 40 minutes
ZNZ to Zanzibar Kempinski: 1 hour
ZNZ to Breezes Beach Club or the Palms: 1.25 hours
ZNZ to Ras Nungwi: 1.5 hours
ZNZ to Mnemba Island Lodge: 1.5 hours + 15-minute speed boat

After your extension to Zanzibar, the following logistics are recommended:


NWA / KLM Airlines – Evening Dar es Salaam Departure (recommended)

The daily KLM circuit takes the shape of triangle with Amsterdam being the top point of the triangle, Kilimanjaro being the bottom left point and Dar es Salaam at the bottom right of the triangle. This daily flight departs Amsterdam in the morning, arrives Kilimanjaro in the evening and then continues to Dar es Salaam before returning back to Amsterdam. Accordingly and for those individuals adding an extension to Zanzibar, it is more optimal to depart Tanzania from Dar es Salaam (20-minute flight from Zanzibar) as opposed from Kilimanjaro (1-hour and 30-minute flight from Zanzibar). Additionally and as discussed above, the daily return KLM flight from Kilimanjaro stops in Dar es Salaam anyway before continuing on to Amsterdam. In conclusion, for those adding a Zanzibar extension, we recommend a Kilimanjaro arrival and a Dar es Salaam departure. This routing is not considered an ‘open jaw’ ticket and can easily be arranged. The following internal flight is then recommended:


Regional Air (daily flight): Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar from 2.30pm to 2.50pm.

Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam, an ADS representative will welcome you to Dar es Salaam and transfer you to your day room and dinner and the Kempinski hotel with a narrated city tour enroute (day room, dinner and transfers are included in our Zanzibar extensions). It is about a 25-minute drive to the Kempinski. After dinner and some relaxation, you will be driven to the international terminal for your late night KLM departure and assisted with check in. Departure times from Dar es Salaam on KLM are as follows:

November to March: 11.50pm
April to October: 11.15pm


British Airways – Morning Dar es Salaam Departure

The British Airways flight out of Dar es Salaam departs in the morning at about 9.00am. There are two options available to facilitate this morning departure.

Option 1 would be to take the early morning flight on Coastal Aviation from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (6.45am – 7.05am). Since this flight departs early in the morning, it may be best to spend your last night on Zanzibar at a hotel closer to the airport such as Fumba Beach Lodge or the Zanzibar Serena Inn. Alternatively, you would be faced with a very early morning wake up and transfer from one of the beach resorts on the east or north coast of Zanzibar.

Option 2 would be to spend the night in Dar es Salaam at the Dar es Salaam Kempinski Hotel before your departure the following morning. You could then take the last flight of the day from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam on Coastal Aviation (5.15pm – 5.13pm).


Emirates and South African Airways Departures

There is a special flight from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam on Coastal Aviation (1.00pm – 1.20pm) to best facilitate an Emirates or SAA departure from Dar es Salaam.


Nairobi Departures

Late night departures from Nairobi can be facilitated via Kenya Airways non-stop flight departing Zanzibar at 4.30pm and arriving Nairobi at 6.00pm.
