The Maasai are pastoralists and live off their herds of cattle, sheep, goats and are legendary for their independence, physical courage, and ferocity as warriors. Witness how the boma prepares cattle and goats to graze each day. Your family may assist the Maasai in morning chores and even help milk the cattle.
Next on the day's itinerary is a family walking safari! Experience the unique sights, smells, and sounds of Africa unconstrained by a vehicle. Learn to recognize different animal footprints and inquire about ancient medicinal plants that have been used for thousands of years to cure various ailments.
Back at the lodge, enjoy a delicious dinner followed by the thrill of a night game drive! Night here is another world altogether - ghosts of hippos emerge from the rivers, giant elephant shapes move like silent battleships passing in the night, and lions roar from the chilly black. Keep an eye out for eyes shining back at you, and watch for nocturnal creatures you won't likely find out during the day.
North Serengeti / Seronera Sametu Camp
Wake to the golden light of dawn sifting into your canvas tent. Enjoy steaming hot chocolate, coffee and cookies delivered to your tent followed by an exciting game drive in the brisk air of early morning. Part of the beauty of a private safari is that you can move at your own pace, so feel free to sleep in and take it easy this morning, or the more ambitious may wish to get out at sunrise. It's your choice; it's your private safari!
Today you will explore the wildlife filled Lobo Valley. Each family member can race to see who can first spot lions hunting, leopards prowling and cheetahs stalking. The North Serengeti is especially famous for large herds of buffalo and elephant. Your guide will explain many exciting facts and tell entertaining stories throughout the day to enhance your adventure.
Swing through the famed Seronera Valley on your way to your accommodations at the Seronera Sametu Camp to rehash your adventures and make an entry in your safari journals.
Serengeti / Seronera Sametu Camp
Start an early morning game drive around the Sametu Kopjes, Maasai Kopjes and the Seronera River Valley - focusing on the river game loops for quality encounters with all three big cats - lions, cheetahs and leopards. With its seasonal swamps and deep pools of water, the Seronera River is an ideal lion and leopard habitat making it the easiest place in Africa to see both big cats in action. Look out for large lion prides that base themselves along the river to ambush their prey as they come to drink.
Groups of hippos can be seen bobbing their heads above the river surface while regal elephants stroll through with stately presence. Pairs of dik dik anxiously dart between large clumps of grasses while giraffe exchange long glances with you from lofty perspectives. Reedbuck and waterbuck frolic while Thomson's gazelle glace about, always alert for that cheetah stalking in the grass nearby. Continue your day exploring the Serengeti in search of the Big Five and more. Enjoy a delicious dinner and retire to your comfortable room for some well-earned relaxation after a day packed with family fun.
Hot Air Balloon Ride / Ngorongoro Lion's Paw Camp
Wake the family up before sunrise for a hot air balloon ride over the spectacular Serengeti wilderness. Glide peacefully above the tropical oasis of the Seronera River Valley and chase the changing colors of dawn as they wash through the morning sky. Your pilot can precisely control the altitude of your path while sometimes flying at treetop height and at other times ascending to 1000 feet. After landing, the adults will be served a traditional champagne toast and everyone will enjoy a fun and delicious 'bush breakfast' cooked to order served beneath the shady awning of an umbrella acacia tree.
Today you will travel to the depths of a collapsed volcano, the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater! Travel through the Serengeti park gate, across an open expanse of flat plains into the rolling Ngorongoro Highlands and right to the brim of the great crater itself - which contains massive numbers of wild animals including a thriving population of the rare black rhinoceros. During your ascent, the altitude increases until you get your first glimpse inside - an ultimate location for stunning views.
Ngorongoro Crater / Lion's Paw Camp / Arusha
Try to be the first visitors in the crater this morning! Descend into the depths of the cauldron and escape into a new safari adventure. From black-maned lions to blushing flamingos to the colossal 'big-tusker' elephants, there are no shortage of wonders to be seen here!
The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and is commonly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. The 2,000 feet high walls of the approximately 10 mile wide Crater create a natural amphitheater for the densest populations of large animals anywhere. The Crater is truly awe-inspiring and will surely be one of the highlights of your safari.
Enjoy a campfire with popcorn or other delicious pre-dinner snacks as you watch the nightly entertainment of sunset over the Western crater rim. Enjoy a delicious dinner and overnight. You will surely feel on top of the world, and being on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater you won't be far from it!
Ngorongoro Crater / Arusha / Visit to School of St. Jude's
Enjoy a delicious family breakfast at the lodge before you depart. Swing through Lake Manyara National Park on the way back to Arusha. A kaleidoscope of birdlife, butterflies and monkeys flit through the forest, while Lake Manyara's glassy surface shimmers in the distance.
This afternoon you will visit the School of St. Jude's, which helps impoverished children in Tanzania receive a free, high-quality education. Take a tour of the campus, meet or even have lunch with the local Tanzanian students! This is an exceptional opportunity for your children to meet and engage with local Tanzanian students their own age! With prior arrangements, you can even visit the home of a local family. Africa Dream Safaris is a major financial contributor to support the School of St. Jude's, and we gladly invite interested guests to learn more!
Check into your day room to relax, repack and refresh. Depart to the airport and say goodbye to your trusted guide who has hosted your private safari adventure. Your family will always cherish the memories made in Tanzania.
