Nestled underneath a leafy sunshade of gallery forest, each private tent offers either a view of the stunning Mara Plains or overlooks the Sabaringo River. The location of Kichwa Tembo is set center stage as the ideal base for prime wildlife viewing. The days spent here usually revolve around morning and afternoon game drives in open-topped 4WD vehicles, into the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the surrounding areas. Other activities include educational talks by the Maasai People, a Maasai Village excursion, and guided nature walks by resident naturalists within the camp grounds, along the Mara River, or alongside the Oloololo escarpment. Due to its unique location on the edge of the Mara Reserve, you may also engage in dramatic night explorations in open-toped vehicles on the land adjacent to the reserve searching for nocturnal animals and predators on their nightly forays.

The grounds of Kichwa Tembo are protected by a fence that keeps elephants out and protects the dense forest from their well intentioned but destructive munching. However, the fence does not keep all the wildlife out. Delightfully docile families of warthogs can be seen wandering the grounds like puppy dogs, grazing on their knees or napping in the shade. Families of monkeys also share the grounds, chattering in the leafy canopy above. Candelabra trees grow tall here, protected from the damaging elements outside the camp boundary.

The Hemmingway-style tents are simple yet comfortable, with snug beds, electricity, hot water, flushing toilets, spacious showers and other amenities. The food is excellent here, and the buffet style service ensures there is enough choices to satisfy the appetite of any traveler, no matter his or her tastes. Location

Located on the western boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, Kichwa Tembo is situated at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment on private land leased from the Maasai People. Situated in the pristine Mara Triangle, Kichwa Tembo offers supreme game viewing opportunities away from most of the other lodges that dominate the more heavily touristed Central Mara Plains.


Accommodations

There are 40 Hemmingway inspired safari tents spaced about the grounds of Kichwa Tembo. These tents are permanent structures, spacious and comfortable, and each one offers views over either the vast Mara grasslands or the winding Sabaringo River. Each accommodation also has an en-suite bathrooms and private veranda. Common areas of the lodge include the reception and lounge area, a spacious bar/sitting room, and indoor/outdoor dining area, an outdoor bonfire sitting area and an interpretive center. A swimming pool glints in the sunshine overlooking the Mara plains. A well-stocked curio shop features many delightful African souvenirs for the discerning shopper.


Food and Drink

Expect superb food and a variety of choices at Kichwa Tembo. This camp is famous for its accommodating team of gracious staff. The Kenyan people will delight you with their warm service and contagious energy. The only thing to rival the service might be the food itself - guests are consistently delighted with the buffet style meals (Breakfast, lunch and dinner) that include a wide range of choices including salads, soups, meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, breads, and hot meats sliced or cooked to order. The greens are especially fresh as they are hand picked daily from the lodge's own traditional vegetable garden. A wide selection of soda, water, and alcoholic drinks are available at an extra charge.
