Peter Meena
Peter (nickname Petro) was born in Marangu in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.
One of 10 children, his father was a doctor who on retirement bought a
farm in the Arumeru District near Arusha. After attending primary school
in Arusha, he returned to Kilimanjaro to attend secondary school. Shortly
after graduation, he went to work with his father on the farm. In 1993,
he was given a chance to take a job as a driver-guide and has now built
up nearly 15 years of experience in the bush.
Peter’s favorite animal is, surprisingly, the spotted hyena. He
enjoys watching large families of hyenas interact with each other and
feels that they are a powerful predator. He feels that the hyena has received
a bad reputation because of its appearance and belief that it is a scavenger.
Quite the contrary is true as hyenas are only opportunistic scavengers
and hunt far more often then they scavenge. In a study conducted in the
Ngorongoro Crater it was determined that out of all the hyena kills observed,
only 4% of the kills where scavenged. In the Crater it was also concluded
that lions scavenge more from hyena killed game then vice versus.
Peter’s favorite bird is the Flappet Lark. This is because of its
soothing call and beauty in flight. Peter loves to follow the movement
of the wildebeest migration and he has an uncanny ability in finding the
largest wildebeest herds in the far reaches of the Serengeti. He enjoys
game driving the Seronera Valley in the Central Serengeti as there are
so many different species of animals that can easily be seen. As you might
expect, his favorite park is the Serengeti.
When not on safari, Peter enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter.
He is a movie buff and enjoys watching a variety of movies.
